WMV and ASF come from the Windows Media Player era and don't open on Mac, iPhone, or Chrome. This page converts WMV on your device so it plays in any browser. It's common in old corporate training videos, camcorder files, and downloads.
How to use it
- 1Click 'Choose WMV files' or drop files onto the page. A whole folder works too.
- 2Click a file in the grid to start preparation — the container is first remuxed to MP4 (a few seconds), and if the browser can't decode that codec it is converted automatically with a progress indicator.
- 3Once ready it plays in place. ← → for the next file, F for full screen, Esc back to the grid.
How it works
The video (WMV1–3, VC-1) and audio (WMA) inside a WMV can't be carried in MP4 as-is or drawn by the browser, so the viewer converts to H.264 + AAC with a progress indicator. The result is kept in memory for playback only.
Preparation runs on ffmpeg.wasm inside the browser. The engine (about 30 MB) is downloaded once on first use and cached after that. Prepared results are held in memory briefly and vanish when the tab closes. Files over 900 MB don't fit in browser memory — convert them first with the Video Converter tool.
Limits
DRM-protected WMV won't open — purchased or rented videos fall in this group. Conversion is always needed, so it takes time proportional to length, and files over 900 MB aren't opened. Audio-only .wma plays as audio.

Opening WMV on a Mac, checking a WMV attachment on an iPhone, and sorting old training-material folders.
Frequently asked questions
It fails with an error.+
The file is most likely DRM-protected. If the file's properties say 'Protected', it plays only in Windows Media Player on the PC it was bought on.
Can't it just play without converting?+
Browsers have no WMV decoder, so conversion is required. In return the file never leaves your device, and once prepared it plays instantly in that tab.
How do I save it as MP4?+
