Camera RAW files (CR2, NEF, ARW, DNG, RAF, ORF, RW2, and more) need a developing app to open, but nearly every RAW carries a JPEG preview the camera created. This page pulls out that preview so you can skim and cull hundreds of shots quickly.
How to use it
- 1Drop a memory card or shoot folder onto the page (subfolders included). 'Choose RAW files' works for single files.
- 2Previews appear in the grid. Click to enlarge, ← → to move through and pick. Shooting info is under the ⓘ button.
- 3Open your picks in a developing app; if you need a JPEG right now, Image Convert can save the preview.
What it shows
The largest embedded JPEG inside the RAW (the preview the camera made at capture, usually full or half size) is located and shown. Canon CR2/CR3, Nikon NEF/NRW, Sony ARW/SRF/SR2, Adobe DNG, Olympus ORF, Fujifilm RAF, Panasonic RW2, Pentax PEF, Hasselblad 3FR, Leica, and more — 21 extensions — with EXIF rotation applied.
Files are read inside the browser only and never sent anywhere. Close the tab and nothing remains.
Limits
What you see is the camera's JPEG, not a development of the RAW data. It reflects the camera's picture style and white balance and differs from what a developing app produces. Bodies that embed small previews (some older models) look soft when zoomed. Files without a preview won't open.
Good for
Culling on a laptop right after a shoot, checking RAW files on a PC without a developing app, and finding photos in old backup folders.
Frequently asked questions
Does it actually develop the RAW?+
No. There's no demosaicing in the browser; it shows the embedded JPEG. That's why hundreds of files move quickly, but exposure and color can differ from a developed result.
What about shutter, aperture, ISO, lens?+
The ⓘ button shows the basics; every tag is in the EXIF Viewer tool, which reads RAW metadata too.
My DNG won't open.+
Some smartphone DNGs and converter-made DNGs don't include a preview JPEG. Those need a developing app.
