MPG and MPEG come from the VCD, early digital camera, and TV-capture era, and VOB is the video file inside a DVD disc. Their MPEG-1/2 codecs aren't decoded by today's browsers. This page converts these files to H.264 on your device and plays them in the browser.
How to use it
- 1Click 'Choose MPG files' or drop files onto the page. A whole folder works too.
- 2Click a file in the grid to start preparation — the container is first remuxed to MP4 (a few seconds), and if the browser can't decode that codec it is converted automatically with a progress indicator.
- 3Once ready it plays in place. ← → for the next file, F for full screen, Esc back to the grid.
How it works
A remux to MP4 is tried first, but the browser can't draw MPEG-1/2 video and the picture stays blank, so the viewer detects that and moves straight on to H.264 + AAC conversion with a progress indicator. AC3 and MP2 audio from VOB becomes AAC. When a VOB carries several audio tracks (e.g. two languages), only the first is kept.
Preparation runs on ffmpeg.wasm inside the browser. The engine (about 30 MB) is downloaded once on first use and cached after that. Prepared results are held in memory briefly and vanish when the tab closes. Files over 900 MB don't fit in browser memory — convert them first with the Video Converter tool.
Limits
VOB copied straight off a DVD is usually CSS-encrypted and plays scrambled or not at all — only files with copy protection removed work. A DVD title split into VTS_01_1.VOB, VTS_01_2.VOB… plays file by file, and DVD subtitles (inside the VOB) aren't shown. Conversion takes time proportional to length, and files over 900 MB aren't opened.

The file still carries DVD copy protection (CSS). This viewer doesn't remove encryption; only ordinary files made by a ripping tool play.
