WMA is the music format from the days of ripping CDs with Windows Media Player. It doesn't play on Mac, iPhone, or Chrome. This page converts WMA to MP3 on your device and plays it — useful for checking an old music folder without installing anything.
How to use it
- 1Click 'Choose WMA files' or drop a music folder onto the page.
- 2Click a file in the grid and it is converted to MP3 on your device (progress shown; seconds to tens of seconds for a 4-minute track).
- 3Playback starts when conversion ends. ← → for the next track, file details under ⓘ.
How it works
Browsers have no WMA decoder, so ffmpeg.wasm converts to MP3 (128 kbps). Standard WMA and WMA Pro are read, and the converted copy is kept in memory for playback only. Tags (title, artist) are shown in the file details.
Files are read inside the browser only and never sent anywhere. Close the tab and nothing remains.
Limits
DRM-protected WMA (tracks bought from old music stores) won't open. WMA Lossless is converted to MP3, so playback is lossy — the original file is untouched. Each track converts on demand, so a several-hundred-track album pauses briefly on every skip.
Good for
Checking a music folder copied from an old PC, listening to WMA on a Mac, and hearing what a track is before converting it to MP3.
Frequently asked questions
How do I save as MP3?+
Convert WMA to MP3 (or AAC, FLAC) in the Audio Converter tool and download. Several tracks at once are fine.
Some tracks won't play.+
If a file is DRM-protected it plays only in Windows Media Player on the original PC. Check the file's properties for 'Protected'.
Is the sound quality changed?+
The playback copy is MP3 at 128 kbps. The original isn't touched; for a better-quality file pick FLAC or a higher bitrate in the Audio Converter.
