Play RMVB and RM

Watch RM and RMVB videos in the browser without RealPlayer — converted on your device, never sent to a server.

This browser doesn't support the folder-open dialog, so the standard folder picker is used. Files are read only on your device.

RM and RMVB are the RealPlayer-era video formats, still common in movies, shows, and lectures downloaded in the 2000s. Today even installing RealPlayer often doesn't help. This page converts RMVB to MP4 on your device and plays it in the browser.

How to use it

  1. 1Click 'Choose RMVB files' or drop files onto the page. A whole folder works too.
  2. 2Click a file in the grid to start preparation — the container is first remuxed to MP4 (a few seconds), and if the browser can't decode that codec it is converted automatically with a progress indicator.
  3. 3Once ready it plays in place. ← → for the next file, F for full screen, Esc back to the grid.

How it works

RealVideo (RV10–RV40) and RealAudio Cook can't be carried in MP4, so the remux step is skipped and the file goes straight to H.264 + AAC conversion. The converter uses the RealMedia demuxer and decoders bundled in ffmpeg.wasm, with a progress indicator. RMVB (variable bitrate) and RM (constant) are handled the same way.

Preparation runs on ffmpeg.wasm inside the browser. The engine (about 30 MB) is downloaded once on first use and cached after that. Prepared results are held in memory briefly and vanish when the tab closes. Files over 900 MB don't fit in browser memory — convert them first with the Video Converter tool.

Limits

Conversion is always required, so it takes time proportional to length (10–20 minutes for a 45-minute episode depending on the PC). Very old RealAudio 14.4/28.8 voice codecs have no decoder, so those files may play without sound. Files over 900 MB aren't opened.

Good for

Checking RMVB movies and lectures on an old external drive, Macs and work PCs where RealPlayer can't be installed, and previewing before converting for keeps.

Frequently asked questions

Why not just install RealPlayer?+

You can, but on current Windows and macOS it's hard to install and heavy on ads. This page converts inside the browser with nothing to install, and the file never goes to a server.

I want to keep the converted MP4.+

Pick the RMVB in the Video Converter tool and convert to MP4 to download a file. It's the same engine, so the result is the same.

Can I watch with a subtitle file (.smi)?+

This page plays video only. To overlay subtitles, open the video together with the .smi or .srt in the Media Player tool. EUC-KR SMI is supported.
