How to use it

Why iPhone photos won't open
Since iOS 11, iPhones save photos as HEIC. It stores the same quality in roughly half the size of a JPG, which is why it became the default, but support outside Apple devices is uneven.
The Windows Photos app needs a separately installed extension, and many older editors, company systems, and website upload forms reject HEIC altogether. A large share of 'the photo won't open' and 'upload failed' problems go away once the format is changed.
JPG or PNG?
For ordinary photos, JPG is the right choice. Around 90% quality is hard to tell from the original and keeps the size reasonable. If a submission site has a size cap, lower the quality a little.
PNG saves without loss but the files are much larger. Choose it only for screenshots, images containing text, or photos you plan to edit repeatedly.
Shooting JPG in the first place
If converting every time is a chore, open Settings on the iPhone, go to Camera → Formats, and choose Most Compatible. Photos taken from then on are saved as JPG, at the cost of larger files.
Photos you already have in HEIC can be converted here whenever needed. Capture details such as date and location may carry over into the converted file, so check them with the EXIF Viewer tool before posting publicly.

Does converting HEIC to JPG lose quality?+
JPG introduces slight loss on save, but at around 90% quality the difference is hard to see. Choose PNG for lossless storage.
