When it comes in handy
Order and transaction exports from shops, banks, or ad platforms that you want to total in a proper spreadsheet, or data produced by a database or script that a colleague needs as Excel.
It is also a quick way to turn a comma-separated list from a text editor into a readable table.
Delimiters and quotes
The first line decides the delimiter: whichever of comma, tab, or semicolon appears most. Commas and line breaks inside quoted cells are read as part of the cell, so addresses or product names containing commas stay intact.
If columns look misaligned in the preview, the source probably mixes delimiters or has unbalanced quotes; fix that line and paste again.
If non-Latin text looks garbled
Files are read as UTF-8. CSVs saved in legacy encodings such as EUC-KR (CP949) by older programs can show garbled characters. Open the file in a text editor, copy the content, and paste it here, or re-save it as 'CSV UTF-8' in the original program.
Cells that contain only a number are stored as numbers so they can be calculated straight away; everything else is stored as text. Values where leading zeros matter, such as postcodes or staff IDs (01234), can lose the zeros when converted to numbers, so check those columns in Excel afterwards.
