When it comes in handy
Application and essay rules such as 'up to 1,000 characters including spaces', caption limits on X or Instagram, the size of a single SMS, or a length requirement for school work.
Word processors count characters too, but seeing the without-spaces figure and the byte count side by side is quicker here.
Why characters and bytes differ
Computers store text as bytes. In UTF-8, Latin letters and digits take 1 byte, Korean characters 3, and emoji 4. So 100 Korean characters are about 300 bytes. SMS and some form fields limit length in bytes rather than characters, which is why non-Latin text hits the cap sooner than expected.
Showing both lets you meet whichever rule applies.
How counting works
Characters are counted as people see them: an emoji made of several internal code points still counts as one. Words are runs separated by spaces; lines follow line breaks.
Submission rules differ on whether spaces count, so check the instructions and read the matching figure.
