When it comes in handy
A photo received by messenger or email refuses to open with 'invalid format', a file arrives with a changed extension and you don't know what it is, or a PDF or image was cut off by an interrupted transfer.
Knowing what the file really is also tells you which program should open it.
What can and cannot be repaired
Structural damage such as junk bytes at the start, a misaligned header, or a truncated end is repaired where possible in images and PDFs. A mismatch between extension and real format (.jpg that is actually PNG) is detected too.
Files whose content is gone because of a failing drive or overwriting, encrypted files, and ransomware-damaged files cannot be recovered by fixing structure, because the data isn't there. That is true of every recovery tool.
ZIP and Office files: diagnosis only
For ZIP and the DOCX, XLSX, and PPTX files built on it, the tool reads the entry list and reports how many entries are intact and where the break is. It does not rebuild the archive, so use the diagnosis to decide whether to try the repair feature of a tool like 7-Zip or to request the original again.
Unknown formats (old .doc, video, and so on) are still identified.

Can it recover a deleted file?+
No. It handles structurally broken files. Erased or overwritten data cannot be recovered by any tool.
