Remove the background from a photo and keep only the subject as a transparent PNG. Two methods: automatic subject detection, and a colour key that removes a solid background you pick with an eyedropper. The detection model is downloaded to your device and runs in the browser, so even portraits are never uploaded.
How to use it
- 1Drop or select an image.
- 2Click Auto to detect the subject and remove the background (the model downloads the first time). For a solid background, use Colour key: pick the colour, then adjust tolerance and edge softness.
- 3Check the result and download as transparent PNG (or WebP).
When it comes in handy
Replacing the cluttered background of marketplace or shop product photos with clean white, isolating a person before changing a profile or ID photo background, or making a signature or logo drawn on paper transparent to place on a document.
A transparent PNG can be dropped onto any other photo or colour, so it is the first step of most compositing.
Auto vs. colour key
Auto suits subjects with a clear shape: people, animals, objects. It is especially good with portraits and handles fine edges like hair reasonably well. The model is downloaded once and cached by the browser.
Colour key is precise when the background is a single colour such as white paper or a green cloth. Pick the colour with the eyedropper; raising tolerance removes similar shades too, and raising edge softness smooths the outline. For logos, signatures, and stickers this gives the cleanest result.
When the result disappoints
Edges can be rough when subject and background share colours, the background is busy, or the subject is semi-transparent (glass, smoke, veils). Reshooting against a bright plain background is the surest fix.
Saving as JPG fills transparent areas with a solid colour, so save as PNG or WebP when transparency matters. For ID photos, the ID Photo tool does background removal and format cropping in one go.

People and distinct objects usually work well; similar colours or busy backgrounds can leave rough edges. For solid backgrounds, Colour key is more precise.

PNG or WebP with a transparent background. JPG has no transparency.
Why the wait the first time?+
The detection model is being downloaded. It is cached afterwards, so later runs start immediately.
I want a different background colour.+
Save the transparent PNG and add a colour in the Image Editor, or for ID photos pick the background directly in the ID Photo tool.
